BIOGRAPHY
“Charlene and Tommy were a strong influence
on Buddy Holly, and us all.”
At age twelve, Charlene was featured in regional shows like the Morton Foods Big Double Header Show in Abernathy, Texas, where she played with regionally famous musicians like the Mayfield Brothers. Charlene’s popularity spread when she became a regular on Lubbock’s first TV station, on the weekly “Circle 13 Dude Ranch Show.” TV was brand new and everybody watched everything, so Charlene soon became a regional star. Almost everybody in Charlene’s family played music and sang. Her folks understood her aspirations and supported her playing in clubs she wasn’t old enough to be in. Tommy Hancock spotted her and hired her to sing with his band, the Roadside Playboys in the late 40’s and 50’s. Along the way, they got married and had four kids. Charlene and Tommy moved to the New Mexican desert to raise their kids. When they got back to performing music, their kids were playing too. The Supernatural Family Band toured the Southwest for 15 years and released 7 albums through the seventies and part of the eighties. In the nineties, Charlene and two of her daughters, La Conni and Traci Lamar, formed the Texana Dames. They’ve released three CD’s, and have toured all over this country, Mexico, South America and 15 European countries.
“They’re worth a drive clear across Texas.” They play clubs, concerts, auditoriums, weddings, and county fairs. They play in palaces, on flatbed trucks, in the middle of nowhere and in the thick of it. They play Western swing, conjunto, cumbia, ranchero, salsa, polka, Classic American music of all kinds, Cajun songs, blues, rock and roll and many originals. Charlene was inducted in the Austin Chronicle Music Awards Hall of Fame in 2000. The Texana Dames were inducted into the Country Music Association of Texas Hall of Fame 2002. The Supernatural Family Band was inducted into the Country Music Association of Texas Hall of Fame 2002. |
