Texas born and San Antonio based accordion extraordinaire, Esteban ‘Steve’ Jordan will be honored at The Steve Jordan Tribute Show be held at the H & H Ballroom in Austin Texas on August 10, 2008.  The event is produced by a local group of Jordan Supporters (including The Oaks owners Steve Dean and Deb Fleming and Larry Lange and His Lonely Knights) and supported by the Austin Latino Music Association.  There will be a live performance by Steve Jordan and his family along with a stellar line up of talent paying special tribute to this extraordinary talent.

PERFORMERS INCLUDE:

Little Joe, Los Pinkys, Max Baca & the TexManiacs, Conjunto Aztlan, Ernie Garibay, Mariachi Corbetas (Shorty & the Corvettes), Chicano Soul Revue with Larry Lange & His Lonely Knights featuring Rudy T Gonzales, Little Henry, Sauce Gonzalez and Dimus Garza, Johnny Degollado y su Conjunto, Bobby Fuentes, Texana Dames (3:30-4pm), and more special guests.  Steve Jordan and family, Rio Jordan will also perform.

Over the course of his career, Jordan’s span of styles has marveled and amazed audiences.  Jordan is known as "the accordion wizard" and "The Jimi Hendrix of the accordion" and in fact has played the master’s ‘Purple Haze’ on his accordion in clubs and at festivals where Mexican-American roots music was welcome and flourished. In 1982, at age 43, Jordan became one of the first musicians named to the Tejano Conjunto Hall of Fame.  He recorded two albums for the Massachusetts folk label Rounder, The Return of El Parche (1986) and El Huracán (1987), and around 1985 the California-based roots music label Arhoolie acquired the rights to some of the music Jordan had recorded for smaller labels. Several Arhoolie releases followed, and in 1986 Jordan provided music for the Cheech Marin film ‘Born in East L.A.  The following year Jordan was nominated for a Grammy Award for his Hacienda-label album Turn Me Loose, which was picked up by giant RCA. Though he lost the award to fellow tejano musician Flaco Jimenez, Jordan gained further exposure and then dropped out of sight shortly after a highly successful appearance in Europe at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1988.  Some speculated that he could afford to cut back on his activities because he was reaping profits from the Tex-Mex Rockordeon he had designed for the German musical instrument firm Hohner, a top-rated accordion manufacturer.   Jordan has continued to perform and record occasionally, and his band includes his two sons Steve III and Richard.   He has appeared at San Antonio's Saluté club on a regular basis in recent years but due to his illness has cut back to only occasional performances.   His creative musical talent still awaits full appreciation by music historians and music lovers from all walks of life.

"A second-generation, innovative virtuoso and an inheritor of the basic style who has brilliantly incorporated outside influences and pushed the music to its limits.”
The Washington Post

"The best accordionist in the world.”
David Hidalgo, Los Lobos lead vocalist

"My favorite form of soulful recharge is getting in a room with Steve "Esteban" Jordan and his accordion.”
Michael Corcoran, Austin American Statesman

MORE EVENT INFORMATION

Sponsors for this event are needed so any interested party, business entity, organization or individual are encouraged to contact the organizers for more information to help with this great cause.  All proceeds will go to benefit Steve Jordan.

MORE BACKGROUND ON ESTEBAN ‘STEVE’ JORDAN

Jordan has worn a black eye patch over one eye for the majority of his life due to partial blindness at an early age.  As a result, he acquired the nickname "El Parche," or "The Patch." For much of his career he used the Spanish and English forms of his first name, Esteban and Steve, more or less interchangeably.  Jordan, one of 15 children born to parents who were migrant agricultural workers in South Texas, is an accomplished musician by any standard and plays 35 different instruments including several obscure ones used in older Latin and Latin American folk music.  He has constantly pushed the limits of the accordion spanning genres of music never attributed to the instrument.  He experimented with rock, blues, and country sounds, but his most striking innovation was the incorporation of a large dose of Latin jazz into the rhythmically straightforward tradition of conjunto, with its polkas, waltzes, and Mexican rancheras. His innovations were all the more striking because he devised them using the simple button accordion, seemingly more restricted in its capabilities than the keyboard "piano" accordion.

Letter to the Lubbock Avalanche Journal from Tommy Hancock

Dear Editor,

I know the people of Lubbock will enjoy knowing how well the current music talent from West Texas was received in Austin at the recent "Sandstorm Picnic".

Every act of The NEW West Texas Music Showcase was an ongoing hit for six hours of constant entertainment at the packed house. Paul Bullock kept the audience very happy between acts with his unique poetry and professional emceeing.  Most people already know of the many well known musicians from Lubbock but this show included only the as yet unknown. It verified the theory that there is a continual phenomenon of terrific musicians in Lubbock--for whatever reason.

When I was an active musician, being from Lubbock was a wonderful help to me.  The current people are sure to enjoy this honor as well.

Thank you Lubbock.

Tommy Hancock

Our father, Tommy X Hancock, wrote an excellent article for the series, "Tales Of The City", that was published in the Austin American Statesman, Insight Section, on Sunday, March 16th.  They titled it "Band Finds Different Texas Than Lubbock."    It was a perfect ending for this year's SXSW. There's also a wonderful picture of him!
Here's the link if you'd like to check it out:  http://www.statesman.com/search/content/editorial/stories/insight/03/16/0316tales.html

In the article, Tommy mentions our "Guru Maharaji" which is an affectionate term of endearment. Maharaji's given name is Prem Rawat, which is how he is most widely known these days. He not only speaks of peace, human nature and fulfillment with clarity, humor and passion, he also offers techniques for furthering a deeper knowing, understanding, of what these words even mean!  It has been profoundly inspiring and simply fun to witness him in his work encouraging self knowledge and expanding humanitarian efforts through his foundation.

For more information visit:

OR hear and see Prem Rawat speaking on television here in Austin:

Monday 9:30 PM Channel 10
Tuesday 7:30 PM Channel 16
Friday 11:00 PM Channel 16

Titles of the broadcasts are: 'The Message of Prem Rawat', 'Words of Peace' and 'What You Are Looking For.'

COTTON CLUB: HALFWAY TO SLATON
May 8 - July 28, 2007

Reception & Performance
with live music by The Texana Dames featuring Tommy and Charlene Hancock!
June 1, 2007
6:00 - 9:00pm

THE BUDDY HOLLY CENTER is thrilled to invite the community to experience Cotton Club: Halfway to Slaton, an exhibit celebrating the culture, history and impact of the famous Cotton Club of Lubbock, Texas. Spanning over forty years and four different locations, the Cotton Club was once the only profitable venue for a band to stop between Dallas and Los Angeles. The Cotton Club was unique because of its blindness to race, color and musical genre, presenting artists such as Little Richard, Elvis, and Willie Nelson, among many others.

For over forty years the Cotton Club stood as the most influential and diverse performance venue in the region. Cotton Club: Halfway to Slaton will explore the social, political and cultural impact the Cotton Club had on West Texas, and the music history that has made West Texas famous around the globe. It is a well known fact that Buddy Holly saw Elvis perform at the Cotton Club, forever impacting his musical career and life. Cotton Club: Halfway to Slaton celebrates the immeasurable influence the notorious dance hall had on this region and the world.

Dear Friends & Family,

FREE SCREENING OF NEW SPANISH/ENGLISH FILM!

Kenneth O. Johnson invites you to a free screening of his Spanish/English language film EL ABANDONADO! on Saturday, March 24th, at the Dougherty Arts Center, at 1110 Barton Springs Road, at 11 A.M.

The film, which screened at the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival in Austin last April, has been reedited and original music has been composed by Arles Estes.  Mr. Estes has a master's degree in music composition from the University of Texas. He has scored many films as well as written original music and sound design for theater.  Also, music by local artists Traci Lamar and Cerronato are featured in the film.

A discussion with the audience will take place after the screening. Be a critic and give the director your feelings on the film before it is sent to a distributor, who has requested the film, and other film festivals.

About the film: Based on the Book of Job, Joe, a wealthy importer, loses his wife and family in a tragic accident on Easter Sunday. Consumed with guilt he gives all his possessions to the church and lives as a homeless person. Four days before the following Easter he kidnaps a nun and holds her hostage to God for a miracle - the return of his family on Easter - the day of resurrection. The film is in Spanish and English with subtitles.

"FIRE IN THE WATER, EARTH IN THE AIR:  LEGENDS OF WEST TEXAS MUSIC":

Author Chris Oglesby is proud to announce that the University of Texas Press has published his book about Lubbock's amazing musical heritage, "Fire in the Water, Earth in the Air: Legends of West Texas Music."

To celebrate, Chris has invited all the artists featured in the book -- and artists who otherwise have connections to Lubbock, West Texas, and Stubb's -- to join in a "Lubbock All-Star Stubb's Sunday Night Jam Reunion" at Stubb's Bar-BQ, 8th & Red River, Austin, TX, on Sunday November 12, 2006.

The festivities will start in the late afternoon and go into evening (doors around 6:00, music starts 7:00-8:00).  In addition to a book signing event, this will be an "open-mic" jam session with opportunities for musicians with Lubbock roots to get on stage and jam.

Copies of the book will be available at the event; Chris will be signing books and we hope that the artists will also make themselves available for signatures as well.

Tommy & Charlene Hancock's
50th Wedding Anniversary!
April 1, 2006

Hi Y'all!!!  Hap-py New Year!!!

We're starting it with a bang! Perhaps you saw what was written regarding the movie 'Lubbock Lights' (now out on dvd) in the Austin Chronicle, posted online at:

http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2005-12-23/music_roundup5.html
 on December 23, 2005, page 60 I believe.

If so, I hope that you also saw the response from our beloved Tommy X in the Chronicle's 'Postmarks':

http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2006-01-06/cols_postmarks.html
January 6, 2006 - page 10.

"Lubbock Lights" is available at Waterloo Records, OR you can order it from AkashicRecordings.com and Tommy X and Charlene will autograph it fer ya!  It's a treasure to us and we are thankful to Amy Maner for her boundless energy of heart and soul.

And a sidenote for what it's worth - Tommy Hancock put out a CD of the same name that includes what he said was "the most requested songs of his band leading career."  The recording was done live in Lubbock with a combination of musicians from his original "Roadside Playboys" and the "Supernatural Family Band."  Lloyd Maines mixed it.

By the way, there was also an excellent feature in the Austin American-Statesman on January 6, 2006, written by Brad Buchholz, entitled "Where Music Roams" which you can read hereThank you, Brad!

Please stay in touch dear friends!

SEX LETTER TO FRIENDS FROM TOMMY X

Because I can't help it, I have re-released some of my x rated comedy material.  I believe these "true stories and strange romances" to each have a high moral message. So, in spite of advice to the contrary, I'm using my corn porn to answer the brazen soft porn TV show "Sex and the City."

Unlike my book, "Zen and the Art of the Texas Two-Step", this collection does not necessarily reflect my own outlook on things. You can take any of the characters in the songs and act out the roll of these real characters I have known. You too can be a corn porn star in "Sex and the COUNTRY!"

For more information...

I'd like to publicly express my thanks to Mandy Mercier, survivor and musician, and to Louis Black, survivor and editor of the Austin Chronicle, for their open discussion in Louis's piece 'Page Two' - on page 10 - of this week's Chronicle - March 18, 2005.  It's the one with the amazing Roky Erickson on the cover.

I appreciate the intelligent, peaceful, soulful way they communicated about a very charged subject. I am surprised and honored by their mention of me along with so many fellow musicians that I admire. I'm truly fortunate to have them each on my side......I feel successful.

Also, we'd like to congratulate our beloved John X Reed for his induction into the 'Austin Chronicle' Music Poll Hall of Fame. He and his guitar led us to Austin many years ago. We've covered 30 years and lots of territory with him and, friends, no one knows better than we do just how deserving he is of this honor. He is exquisitely talented, professional, always looks soooo dapper and his laugh makes the heart soar!

Love,
Conni Hancock
and the Texana Dames

That's how we knew that she was the Dame for us. She has taken special care and has put personal attention into customizing, making us feel comfortable. It was her idea to include our voices with the pictures she so skillfully retouched in our Photo Album. - Thank You for your expertise, Beverly.

Any notices you receive from us not signed by one of us has more than likely been written by Erin. - Thank You for your friendship, Erin.

Michael McFarland, even as his family grows, has managed to make time for us. He has helped to educate us in the ways of the computer, translating and conveying info. He has helped us with his formal education to begin our process of archiving and preserving over 50 years worth of creativity. The creation of the Merchandise Page is much to Michael's credit. - Thank You for your interest, Michael...Thanks to the entire McFarland/Ramirez branch of the Supernatural Family.

Joyce Meyer made buying & selling our merchandise easy by setting up our PayPal account. We met her through Beverly and she's always a pleasure to work with. She's proof that dames of a feather do flock together...?! - Thank You for answering your phone!

Robert Lovato, from Sound Recorders, has gone beyond the call of duty in the technical design of our cd covers and the scanning and retouching of countless photos. Also a new father, we have been fortunate that he has made time for us. - Thank You for being easy going.
